Jadrolinija soon to tender for new RoPax tonnage

FerryCroatian state-owned ferry operator Jadrolinija plans to launch tenders for four e-fuel powered RoPax ferries by the end of 2026 and later for three smaller electric ferries as part of an extensive fleet modernisation programme.

Speaking to Croatian media Novi list, Jadrolinija‘s Management Board Chairman Robert Blažinovic said preparations were well advanced, with procurement schedules expected to be announced shortly.

The four ferries are considered important to retaining profitable routes whose concessions expire in 2027. Signed shipbuilding contracts count towards the evaluation of concession bids, and Jadrolinija aims to secure these before the forthcoming tenders.

Green methanol and biodiesel had previously been identified as potential fuels for the ferries, although Blažinovic declined to confirm propulsion specifications while technical parameters remain under discussion.

The three electric double-ended RoPax ferries are intended for services around Šibenik, Zadar and Dubrovnik. These operating areas were selected with port authorities following assessments of electricity supply and charging infrastructure. An electric vessel previously envisaged for the Lošinj–Cres area cannot currently proceed because the necessary infrastructure conditions are not in place.

Separately, Jadrolinija expects to sign a construction contract for a replacement for 1963-built pure passenger vessel POSTIRA by year-end. Final bids were requested on 16 October 2026 following a competitive procedure with negotiation.

The broader programme has an estimated value of EUR 200–250 million. Financing is expected to combine a government capital injection, internal resources, commercial borrowing and EU funding, alongside potential arrangements with the World Bank and International Finance Corporation. Jadrolinija’s own contribution could cover up to 20% of the investment.
