Smyril Line marks keel laying of new RoRo vessel
Ro-roSmyril Line, together with CIMC Raffles Shipyard in China, has reached another major milestone in the construction of its new RoRo vessel with the successful keel laying ceremony. The project includes two identical RoRo ships, each measuring 190 metres in length with 3,300 lane metres for trailers. Both cargo vessels will strengthen Smyril Line’s North Atlantic network and are scheduled to enter service in 2026.
Designed for year-round performance in the challenging North Atlantic, the vessels place strong emphasis on crew comfort and well-being. Developed in close cooperation with naval architects Knud E. Hansen and drawing on Smyril Line’s extensive regional expertise, the ships are specifically tailored for the route linking Europe, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland.
The new vessels will be modern, efficient, and environmentally advanced, meeting all international emission standards. Compared with the current fleet, they will emit significantly less per transported tonne. Equipped with battery systems and shore power connections, port operations can be emission-free. In addition, the vessels are designed to be able to operate on e-methanol, which Smyril Line has identified as its preferred green energy solution for the future.
