Smyril Line Celebrates Steel Cutting for New Ro-Ro Vessel
Ro-roSmyril Line, in collaboration with CIMC Raffles Shipyard in China, marked a significant milestone with the steel cutting ceremony for their new ro-ro vessel. The project involves two identical ro-ro ships, each 190 metres long with 3,300 lane metres for trailers. These cargo ships will join Smyril Line’s network and are scheduled to begin sailing in 2026.
"Our two new vessels are a key step in shaping the future of North Atlantic shipping," said Jens Meinhard Rasmussen, CEO of Smyril Line. "They reflect our long-term commitment to innovation and sustainability, and we are proud to progress with trusted partners."
Designed for optimal year-round seaworthiness in the North Atlantic, the ships prioritise crew comfort and well-being on board.
Developed in close partnership with naval architects Knud E. Hansen, and leveraging Smyril Line's extensive North Atlantic experience, the ships are tailored for the route connecting Europe, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland.
The vessels will be modern and environmentally friendly, complying with all international emission standards. Compared to Smyril Line's current fleet, they will emit significantly less per transported tonne. Equipped with a battery system and shore power capability, port operations can be emission-free. The ships are also designed to operate on e-methanol, considered Smyril Line's preferred green energy solution for the future.
