Scottish Government awards GBP 3.9 billion Clyde and Hebridean ferry contract to CalMac Ferries
FerryThe Scottish Government has directly awarded a GBP 3.9 billion, 10-year contract to state-owned CalMac Ferries to operate Scotland’s west coast ferry services, emphasising a public service model over commercial operation. The Clyde and Hebridean Ferry Service contract, extended past its 2024 expiry, serves 50 destinations.
The direct award, bypassing competitive tendering, aims to prioritise island communities’ needs but faces criticism for potentially missing efficiency gains. Trade unions endorse the decision but urge merging CalMac Ferries and CMAL to improve coordination and bolster Scottish shipbuilding. Critics, including political parties, highlight persistent fleet and governance issues.
