Port of Ystad will build ferry berths for the new Polferries units
PortThe Swedish Port of Ystad will build two new ferry berths, and Polish ferry company Polish Baltic Shipping - Polferries is to order two new larger ferries for the Ystad-Swinoujscie route. The Letter of Intent was signed today in Ystad.
Today Port of Ystad, Port of Swinoujscie and Polferries signed a Letter of Intent on board MAZOVIA in Ystad. Polferries is going to order two new 228 m long ro-pax vessels for the route Ystad-Swinoujscie, and the ports agreed to build new ferry berths. The decision is a result of significant increase in traffic volumes on the route, and the three partners expect that the current capacity will be insufficient for the future traffic volumes.
"The Letter of Intent is of great importance to Port of Ystad. It means that we will build two new ferry berths in the outer harbour. In close corporation with Polferries and Port of Swinoujscie we are now better prepared to face the traffic volumes we expect in the future. We see great potential in the route and expect that the increase in traffic volumes we have seen the past years will continue in the future", says Björn Boström, CEO of Port of Ystad.
The ferry berths in Ystad will be ready in 2018. The first of Polferries new 3,500 lane metre, 228m long ro-pax vessels is expected to be introduced to the route in 2019, and thereby increase capacity with more than 30 percent.
It has not been announced yet which yard will build the 250-cabin ferries.
