Funding secured for BESS capacity in Igoumenitsa Port
PortIgoumenitsa Port Authority S.A. has secured funding for a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), under the national programme “Energy Storage Systems for Businesses – Go Beyond Solar Battery.”
With a total investment budget of approximately EUR 981,000, the project represents another important milestone in the ports green transition strategy. The new energy storage system is expected to complement the Igoumenitsa Port’s 1.5 MW photovoltaic park, enabling more efficient use of renewable energy, improving energy management and reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources.
“Building on our ongoing investments in renewable energy, Onshore Power Supply (OPS) and sustainable port infrastructure, we continue to transform Igoumenitsa into a modern, energy-efficient and environmentally responsible port,” the port states.
A battery energy storage system (BESS) can store energy generated by renewable sources such as solar panels or wind turbines. This allows electricity to be used when it is needed, rather than when it is produced. A BESS can also ensure that sufficient power is available at a port offering charging for fully electric ships - typically ferries - even if the local grid cannot supply the required power.
Finally, a BESS can serve as a power bank or backup supply or enable a port to buy electricity when prices are lowest and store it for its own operations - or even sell it back to the supplier when the grid requires additional capacity.
