GNV expands Mediterranean fleet with GNV PHOENIX and new LNG vessels for Italy-Morocco routes
FerryGNV continues its fleet growth by adding the GNV PHOENIX while preparing to deploy two new LNG-powered ships on the strategic Italy-Morocco corridor in summer 2026.
The GNV PHOENIX, a 214-metre RoPax ferry built in 2003 and formerly known as ATHARA in the Moby Lines fleet, has officially joined GNV’s fleet, bringing the total number of vessels to 29. With a gross tonnage of 35,736, the ship can accommodate up to 2,700 passengers in 324 cabins and offers 835 lane metres of freight capacity.
It will undergo targeted refitting works before entering commercial service to meet GNV’s standards for comfort and efficiency. The addition strengthens GNV’s capacity on key Mediterranean routes, particularly those linking mainland Italy with Sardinia.
In parallel, GNV is enhancing its network between Italy and Morocco with two new LNG-powered vessels: GNV AURORA and GNV VIRGO. Starting 1 June and 1 July 2026 respectively, the ships will operate on the Genoa–Barcelona–Tanger Med route, offering increased frequency, capacity and comfort.
The deployment supports growing passenger demand — including families and Moroccan communities participating in the annual Marhaba operation — while boosting trade flows between the two countries.
Both new vessels feature LNG propulsion, delivering up to 50% lower CO2 emissions per transportable load compared to older ships, and are prepared for cold ironing. The moves reflect GNV’s strategy of responsible growth, fleet renewal and strengthening vital Mediterranean logistics links.
