Further two newbuilds in the making for the Small Vessel Replacement Programme
FerryIn March last year, Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. signed a contract to build seven ferries for Scotland’s Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL).
Construction has so far begun on five vessels. Under the agreed schedule, work on successive ferries starts at three-month intervals, meaning the vessels are currently at different stages of construction.
8 October, Remontowa Shipbuilding held a keel-laying ceremony for two more ferries – the fourth and fifth in the series. Meanwhile, the second vessel is already ready for launching.
“The laying of two further keels and the second vessel’s readiness for launching – confirm that the contract is progressing on, or even ahead of, schedule. The first of the seven vessels will be delivered to the owner towards the end of next year,” states the shipyard.
The ferries are being built under the Small Vessel Replacement Programme, which aims to replace ageing vessels serving routes along Scotland’s west coast and improve the quality and reliability of maritime transport.
