Construction started on a new expedition cruise ship for Antarctica21 at ASENAV

CruiseOn 8 February, ASENAV officially initiated the construction of an expedition cruise ship for Antarctica21 called MAGELLAN DISCOVERER, the first of its kind to be manufactured in the Americas with a hybrid-electric propulsion system and Azipods.

Designed as a sister ship to the 2019-delivered MAGELLAN EXPLORER, the MAGELLAN DISCOVERER mirrors the elegant style of its sibling and brings its own unique flair with exciting enhancements. Adhering to the rigorous PC6 ice class specifications, this vessel is tailored for the company’s signature Antarctic fly-and-sail operations, hosting up to 76 guests in 40 cabins spread over three passenger decks.

MAGELLAN DISCOVERER boasts advanced heat recovery systems and meets the Tier III emission standards. Onboard, guests will find a spacious dining area, versatile meeting rooms, an elegant observation lounge and bar, a state-of-the-art gym, and a charming gift shop. The ship’s accessible bow offers an intimate connection with the breathtaking Antarctic waters.

The ship’s accommodations seamlessly blend adventure and comfort. It features ten luxurious Suites, including two spacious Family Suites, twenty-two Deluxe Veranda Cabins, six Single Veranda Cabins, and two Triple Veranda Cabins. Each cabin offers king-size beds, cozy sitting areas, and private balconies for personal views of the Antarctic wonder. The ship introduces a unique wet science lab and an expansive top deck for 360-degree views of the stunning surroundings. Guests can unwind in the sauna with panoramic windows after a day of exploration. The added convenience of an elevator serving five decks enhances the onboard comfort.

Magellan Discoverer is set to revolutionize the journey with a state-of-the-art hybrid-electric propulsion system, featuring powerful MAN main engines, and ABB’s innovative Azipod® propulsion units and Energy Storage System with Battery Bank from Corvus. This ensures a smoother and quieter voyage through the icy realms.

Like its predecessor, MAGELLAN DISCOVERER will be constructed at the ASENAV shipyard in Valdivia, Chile, reinforcing our fruitful collaboration. We eagerly anticipate welcoming guests aboard in December 2026 for an unforgettable Antarctic adventure aboard the Magellan Discoverer.
