Construction of Gotlandsbolaget-Supported Biogas Facility Begins
On 21 May, the first sod was turned for a new liquid biogas (LBG) production facility just outside Eskilstuna, Sweden. The project is a collaboration between Gotlandsbolaget, Andion CH4 Renewables, and Equitix, marking a significant milestone in Gotlandsbolaget’s long-term commitment to fossil-free shipping.
“Breaking ground today shows we’re not waiting for the future – we’re investing in it. Liquid biogas is a solution available now and will play a crucial role in our energy transition,” said Mikael Razola, Head of Gotland Tech Development, part of Gotlandsbolaget.
The investment was announced in December 2024. With the first spade in the ground, construction has begun on the facility, which is expected to be operational by late 2026. The plant will have a production capacity of approximately 5,400 tonnes of LBG per year. Through a ten-year agreement, Gotlandsbolaget has secured the majority of the output for Gotlandstrafiken, covering around 10% of Destination Gotland’s annual fuel needs. Over a decade, this is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 100,000 tonnes compared to an equivalent amount of fossil gas (LNG).
“We’re delighted to increase access to high-quality biogas while securing supplies for our operations. This is a vital step in reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing energy security,” said Henry Hammarström, Project Manager/Energy Expert at Gotland Tech Development.
Gotlandsbolaget’s Head of Growth, Anders Boman, also attended the ceremony and highlighted the value of collaboration: “This is what happens when shipping companies, technology firms, and investors come together. To succeed in transforming shipping, you need both vision and action – and now we’re literally standing on the construction site.”
The biogas initiative is part of Gotlandsbolaget’s broader energy transition strategy.
