Boreal places order for 20 Candela electric hydrofoils
High-speedNorwegian ferry operator Boreal AS has placed a landmark order with Swedish electric boat maker Candela for 20 P-12 hydrofoiling electric ferries, in what is described as the world’s largest fleet of its kind.
The deal will see the first two vessels delivered in 2027, with the remaining 18 following in annual batches through to 2030. Each P-12 can carry up to 25 passengers and combines a cruising speed of 25 knots with a range of approximately 40 nautical miles on a single charge.
Using advanced carbon-fibre hydrofoils, the vessels “fly” above the water surface once above 18 knots, dramatically reducing drag and energy consumption by up to 80 per cent compared with conventional ferries. This technology makes high-speed, zero-emission operations viable on Norway’s challenging fjord and coastal routes, where traditional electric vessels have previously struggled with range and speed limitations.
Boreal CEO Nikolai Knudsmoen Utheim said the investment introduces “a completely new generation of fast boats that fly over the water surface” and will enable more frequent services and improved comfort for passengers on both urban and rural routes.
