Baleària to Name Its Third LNG Fast Ferry After Tenerife Writer
High-speedBaleària will name its third LNG fast ferry MERCEDES PINTO, in recognition of a prominent 20th-century Spanish writer. The new vessel is scheduled to launch in September at the Astilleros Armon Gijon shipyard.
"Naming this innovative catamaran MERCEDES PINTO is a way of honouring a woman ahead of her time, whose vocation marked an era in the advancement of social rights through literature, among other fields. MERCEDES PINTO’s legacy reflects our commitment to the Canary Islands’ sociocultural heritage," emphasised the shipping company’s president, Adolfo Utor.
The fast ferry MERCEDES PINTO will join the shipping company’s series of high-speed vessels powered by LNG: the ELEANOR ROOSEVELT (2021) and the MARGARITA SALAS (2023), maintaining similar characteristics to its twins: 123 metres in length, 28 metres in width, and a capacity to transport 1,200 passengers and 425 vehicles. Likewise, the MERCEDES PINTO will integrate the improvements in comfort and on-board services applied in the MARGARITA SALAS, with a second deck featuring a seating lounge at the bow and an aft terrace with an outdoor bar.
MERCEDES PINTO will be Baleària’s twelfth vessel with dual fuel LNG engines, a technology the company has been investing in for almost a decade and which is also designed to run on 100% biomethane, as well as green hydrogen blends of up to 25%.
