JOSEFINA DE LA TORRE
Balearia Canarias reports early freight and passenger traffic gains
Balearia's renewed freight offering in the Canaries has been boosted by a change in vessel schedule. The newly chartered 2023-built 4,070 lanem, 32,894 GT JOSEFINA DE LA TORRE, with 230 reefer sockets, has taken over the schedule of the smaller 3,400 lanem, 30,998 GT VILLA DE TAZACORTE, leaving Cadiz at 14.00 every Saturday, sailing to Arrecife in Lanzarote, then to Las Palmas before arriving early on Monday morning in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The vessel will then return via Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de la Palma and Tenerife to Cadiz.
The VILLA DE TAZACORTE's schedule requires a departure from Cadiz every Tuesday at 13.00, sailing directly to Las Palmas and then on to Tenerife. The return voyage to Cadiz will sail via Santa Cruz de la Palma, Tenerife and Las Palmas.
The new schedule is advantageous both for mainland logistics operators serving the Canary Islands and for the important northbound exports of bananas. Balearia Canarias has now taken control of two very important logistics operators — one previously belonging to Trasmediterranea and the other, Transportes Intercanarios, with a fleet of over 500 freight vehicles, to Armas.
In addition to the two weekly freight sailings, the 29,514 GT RoPax VOLCAN DE TINAMAR, which has a capacity of 1,500 passengers and 600 cars, sails twice weekly from Cadiz to the Canary Islands. With an 1,850 lanem freight capacity, the vessel also transports significant volumes of freight.
On inter-Canarian routes, Balearia Canarias has positioned the 24,409 GT Visentini-class SICILIA on the Las Palmas–Arrecife route. The vessel, which has capacity for 1,000 passengers, 2,050 lanem of freight and 75 cars, has proved to be very suitable for the route, both in terms of punctuality and capacity.
Both freight and passenger traffic volumes have increased over the summer, heralding the undoubted early success of the company.
The 14,411 GT RoPax AL ANDALUS EXPRESS, which had previously operated the Arrecife route, has already been painted in Balearia Canarias colours but has been switched to the Balearic Islands for the summer season, sailing between Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.
