KT Marine welcomes Damen Fast Ferry 4212 to South Korea

South Korea’s KT Marine held a welcoming ceremony for its new vessel, a Damen Fast Ferry 4212 named HAMEL. The company placed its order for the vessel earlier this year. The rapid delivery is the result of Damen’s serial construction of vessels for stock.
HAMEL will transport up to 423 passengers at speeds of up to 40 knots. She will operate a route between Yeosu Harbour and Geomundo Island. HAMEL is the seventh Damen Fast Ferry, and the fifth Fast Ferry 4212, to be delivered to South Korea in recent years.

MEYER WERFT to build Disney Wish-Class Cruise Ship for Oriental Land Company to operate in Japan

The Oriental Land Company (OLC) has commissioned MEYER WERFT to build a Disney Wish-class cruise ship for the Japanese market. The new ship is scheduled to be delivered in 2028. OLC, which operates the Disney theme parks in Japan, is expected to commence operation of the ship by early 2029.
MEYER WERFT has already delivered the DISNEY WISH, the first ship in the Wish class, to Disney Cruise Line in 2022. The two sister ships DISNEY TREASURE and DISNEY DESTINY are already under construction in Papenburg and will be delivered in 2024 and 2025.

Launching of GNV’s second of four new ro-paxes at GSI and keel-laying for the third

GNV celebrated the launching of GNV ORION, the second of four ro-pax vessels currently under construction in China at the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) shipyard. The yard has also held the keel-laying ceremony for the third vessel, GNV VIRGO.
GNV ORION will be delivered to the owner in the summer of 2025 and will have a gross tonnage of approximately 52,000, a length of 218 metres, a width of 29.60 metres and will be able to reach a maximum speed of 25 knots. She will have 433 cabins and a carrying capacity of 1,785 passengers and 3,100 lane metres. The first ship, GNV POLARIS, will be delivered at the end of this year. The last two ships, GNV VIRGO and the not-yet named fourth unit, will be delivered in 2026 and will become LNG-powered.

Baleària's 'new fast ferry MARGARITA SALAS delivered

The MARGARITA SALAS of Baleària has been delivered from the Armon Shipyard in Gijón. The vessel is Baleària's second fast ferry equipped with dual fuel gas engines and is a near sister to the 2021-delivered ELEANOR ROOSEVELT, but with a 10% increase in the vessel's power and the addition of a second passenger deck.
Baleària has invested EUR 126m in the construction of the MARGARITA SALAS, which will connect Mallorca, Menorca and Barcelona daily and throughout the year.
The new vessel has the same dimensions as the ELEANOR ROOSEVELT (123 metres long and 28 metres wide) but has 10% more power thanks to the four 9,600 kW dual fuel engines.

AS Tallink Grupp statistics for June 2024 and Q2 2024
In June 2024 AS Tallink Grupp transported 570,803 passengers, which is a 3.7% decrease compared to June 2023. The number of cargo units decreased by 8.5% to 25,383 units and the number of passenger vehicles decreased by 9.8% to 86,651 units in the same comparison.
In the second quarter of 2024 (April-June) AS Tallink Grupp transported 1,451,768 passengers, which is a 5.8% decrease compared to the same period a year ago. The number of cargo units increased by 1.7% to 86,813 units and the number of passenger vehicles decreased by 11.4% to 209,760 units in the same comparison.
Red Funnel and Artemis Technologies announce the first zero (direct)-emissions high-speed vessel between the South Coast and the Isle of Wight

Red Funnel announced a new partnership with Artemis Technologies (ATL) to introduce a high-performance, (direct) emission free vessel to its customers in late 2025 on the company’s Southampton to West Cowes route, currently served by RED JET 6 and 7.
Operation of the electric e-foiling Artemis EF-24 Passenger ferry will save up to 3,700 tonnes of CO2e per year. Using electricity from renewable sources will increase annual emissions savings to approximately 4,150 tonnes of CO2e.

Foreship provides energy efficiency answers for next-generation CMA CGM ro-pax newbuilds

Foreship expertise in energy efficiency and sustainability will be central to optimizing the performance of two new ro-pax ferries on their delivery into west Mediterranean services connecting Marseille and Corsica in 2027.
The ships, due to be delivered to CMA CGM subsidiary La Méridionale, will be distinguished not only by powerplants that support dual fuel strategies for low carbon operations at sea but by enough battery power to enable zero-emission port stays.
Offering capacity for 1,000 passengers and 2,500 lane metres of freight, the 180m long ships have been developed to modernize operations on the crossing between Marseille and Corsica.

Stena Line lays the keel for STENA FUTURA – the first of its NewMax ships

Stena Line has reached an important milestone in its fleet investment programme with the keel laying of the first NewMax vessel to be deployed on the Belfast-Heysham route. At the same time, the ferry’s name was disclosed: STENA FUTURA.
The keel laying ceremony of the first of the two all-new NewMax hybrid vessels took place in China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in WeiHai, China. STENA FUTURA, the chosen name for this ship, is one of two NewMax hybrid vessels that will play a key role in Stena Line's journey to sustainable fuel as they will both be able to operate on methanol fuel.

Interferry calls for a Fleet-Balancing mechanism to comply with CII

Johan Roos, Director of Regulatory Affairs, Interferry, "In my March Regulatory Report, I wrote about the outcome of the IMO’s 81st session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 81). Although we were expecting a review of the much-contested Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), EU member states had mutually agreed to block IMO to further discuss the technical and practical details of the CII with the review deferred to MEPC 82, to be held September 30 – October 4."
