(Updated) Vehicle deck fire on board GOLDEN BRIDGE
FerryOn the morning of 6 March at 5:00 a.m., a fire broke out in a truck tractor on the vehicle deck of A-Ships Management’s GOLDEN BRIDGE, currently on a long-term charter to GNV. The 26,526 GT ferry, carrying 169 passengers and 46 crew members, was at the time about 50 nautical miles off Palma de Mallorca, where it was sailing from Barcelona.
A major response operation was launched, coordinated by the Palma Coordination Centre, which dispatched a helicopter and two rescue vessels to GOLDEN BRIDGE’s position. However, the ferry’s crew managed to extinguish the fire themselves. Immediately after the alarm was raised, the crew promptly evacuated the stern area of the vessel (i.e., above the affected garage area) and escorted passengers to the forward lounges as a precautionary measure.
Throughout the incident, the Master kept passengers regularly informed via the vessel’s public address system. Importantly, no passengers requested or required medical assistance while onboard the vessel. As also noted, the crew responded promptly and successfully extinguished the fire, and the vessel proceeded safely to Palma de Mallorca under her own power.
