UECC Slashes Emissions by 107,000 Tonnes in 2024 with BioLNG, Targets Net Zero by 2040
Ro-roUnited European Car Carriers (UECC) significantly reduced well-to-wake CO2 emissions in 2024 by 107,000 tonnes, a 70% increase from 2023’s 63,000-tonne reduction, primarily through using liquefied biomethane (LBM) on LNG-fuelled vessels under its Sail for Change initiative, backed by major European vehicle manufacturers.
UECC aims for a 155,000-tonne reduction in 2025 and 187,000 tonnes by 2030, leveraging alternative fuels like bioLNG, which comprised 42% of fuel use in 2024, up from 34% in 2023, with a target of 58% by 2030. BioLNG, derived from manure-based feedstock, is key to achieving a 45% carbon intensity reduction by 2030 and net zero by 2040, surpassing IMO and EU 2050 targets. UECC's fleet, including dual and multi-fuel LNG vessels with battery hybrid capabilities, supports this, with two newbuilds due in 2028. The company's carbon intensity of 57 gCO2e/MJ in 2025 is well below FuelEU's 89.3 gCO2e/MJ threshold, ensuring a compliance surplus that can be monetised, reducing costs for customers under the EU ETS and FuelEU regulations.
