Strong Autumn Break for Molslinjen

FerryMolslinjen was flat out during the autumn break – or efterårsferien, as it's known in Denmark. Many opted for the sea route, and the company's ten ferry lines were just 363 passengers shy of smashing the record from 2019 – the last normal year before the pandemic. The robust autumn traffic came hot on the heels of an intense summer, when over five million passengers travelled with Molslinjen.

The efterårsferien – the Danish equivalent of the autumn break – has just wrapped up, and once again the Danes have shown that they love hopping on the ferry for their trips. During the holiday week, 311,965 passengers travelled with Molslinjen – an increase of 8.4 per cent compared to the same period last year, when 287,716 made the journey. The previous autumn break record was set in 2019 with 312,328 passengers.

The summer was a belter too. In June, July, and August, 5,040,036 passengers travelled on the company's lines – a rise of 2.4 per cent compared to 2024. That's growth that outpaces the Danish ferry market as a whole, which only crept up by about 1 per cent over the summer. The figures from summer and autumn make it crystal clear that ferry traffic keeps playing a vital role in the Danes' travels – both on holiday and in the daily commute.

"The Danes plump for the ferry in droves when they're off on holiday, visiting family, or commuting between regions. The surge in interest shows they rate the quick and flexible links we provide," says Kristian Durhuus, CEO of Molslinjen.

"We've had loads of fully booked sailings, which backs up that the ferry trip is still a key part of the Danes' travel habits – and a cracking alternative to the car, train, or plane," adds Kristian Durhuus.

It's chiefly the routes between Jutland and Zealand, the Öresundslinjen, Bornholmslinjen and Fanølinjen that are racking up the biggest passenger numbers – with an especially bustling August that plainly boosted the summer's stellar performance.
