Stena Line records a record number of Danish ski travelers to Sweden in 2024

FerryDanish ski travelers are flocking to Swedish ski resorts like never before, something that can be confirmed by both Stena Line and SkiStar, the leading player in ski tourism in Scandinavia. Already during the first half of January, Stena Line has reported an increase in the number of ski travelers by 11 percent. Together with the 61 percent increase at the end of 2023 for this year's ski holidays, Stena Line is now confident that 2024 will be a record year.

The Swedish mountains attract Danish ski travelers like never before and the ferry company Stena Line is experiencing a record increase in the number of Danish skiers booking a place on the ferry between Fredrikshavn and Gothenburg. In the first half of January alone, Stena Line has had a passenger increase of 11 percent and a revenue increase of 37 percent compared to the same period in 2023. At the same time, in the fall, Stena Line reported a 50 percent increase in group bookings for 2024, while the number of private ski trip bookings increased by 61 percent compared to the first quarter of 2023. Stena Line continuously follows the growing interest in ski trips to Sweden and believes that there are several reasons for the positive development.

"We are happy about the record-breaking interest in Swedish ski trips and look forward to welcoming even more Danish ski guests on board Stena Line. We see several reasons why the Swedish mountains appeal to Danish ski enthusiasts. One of these reasons may be the increased awareness of the environmental impact that traditional ski holidays in, for example, the Alps have, where air travel is often unavoidable. At the same time, the low Swedish krona makes Swedish ski holiday offers more affordable and attractive. Furthermore, we believe that the physical proximity to Denmark also plays a significant role," says Ulf Staff, Travel Commercial Manager at Stena Line.

SkiStar, the leading player in ski tourism in Scandinavia, is also experiencing record high bookings from Danish ski enthusiasts traveling to Sweden. In January, SkiStar, which owns and operates the Swedish ski facilities in Sälen, Åre, Vemdalen and Hammarbybacken, reported a 28 percent increase in the number of Danish visitors ahead of the 2024 ski season. And it is above all the weeks after the traditional school holidays that SkiStar sees historically high booking numbers with an increase of 50 percent.

"We set a historic record in the number of Danish ski guests to our ski destinations this season. We are constantly working to develop our destinations with the guest in focus where we offer snow-sure experiences and a long ski season which plays a big role in our success. At the same time, there is no doubt that Sweden's competitive prices play a role and the fact that it is easy to travel here from Denmark by car and ferry strengthens the travel experience between the two neighboring countries," says Stefan Sjöstrand, CEO of SkiStar.
