ShoreLink to electrify Eckerö Line’s Helsinki–Tallinn Route with automated charging solutions
FerryShoreLink will provide two 6.5 MVA ChargeLink solutions to Eckerö Line’s FINLANDIA, supporting Rederi Ab Eckerö Group's efforts to reduce emissions on the busy Helsinki–Tallinn route. The solution will enable onboard battery systems to be charged at both the Port of Helsinki and the Port of Tallinn, facilitating high-frequency passenger and freight operations between the two cities.
This initiative is a key part of Eckerö Line’s long-term strategy to reduce the environmental footprint of its fleet through gradual electrification. A major milestone is the installation of battery systems on FINLANDIA, which will enable the vessel to operate on electrical power during port arrivals, departures, and harbour stays. This approach cuts fuel consumption and emissions precisely where they have the greatest local impact. FINLANDIA will receive a 1.4 MWh battery pack from Wärtsilä, which will replace one of the ferry's four diesel generators.
ShoreLink’s ChargeLink system has been selected to provide a fully automated and dependable interface between the ship and the port. The unit operates at 11 kV AC and provides shore power up to 6.5 MVA with a rated current of 350 A. The system automatically adapts to changing water levels and vessel movements in all directions. ChargeLink enables consistent, safe, and hands-free charging, helping to maintain predictable turnaround times and support efficient port operations.
Installation and commissioning of the ChargeLink systems at both ports are scheduled for summer 2026.
