SEK 35 million in compensation after the MARCO POLO grounding
FerryThe Swedish Coast Guard’s claim for compensation covers the authority’s response operations, certain vessel standby costs, as well as expenses for other equipment and personnel. For this, the party responsible for the damage – TT-Line and its insurance company - compensated The Swedish Coast Guard with almost SEK 36 million.
It was on Sunday, 22 October 2023, that TT-Line’s RoPax MARCO POLO ran aground in Pukavik Bay off the coast of Blekinge (Southern Sweden). At least 60,000 litres of oil leaked into the sea, marking the start of an environmental rescue operation in which the emergency response phase lasted for 19 days.
The compensation will be paid directly into the Swedish state treasury. The imposed water pollution charge of SEK 1.4 million (under the Act on Measures Against Pollution from Ships, based on the vessel’s gross tonnage and the amount of oil released) has been appealed by TT-Line to the Stockholm District Court.
