Record Number of Foot Passengers on Öresundslinjen Ferries in August
FerryThe gangways on Öresundslinjen’s ferries have rarely been as busy as this August. A total of 372,455 foot passengers crossed the Öresund– the highest figure in more than 25 years, and a sharp rise from 356,000 in August 2024. The last time numbers were higher was back in August 1999, before the opening of the Öresund Bridge.
“In fact, we have to go all the way back to 1999 to find an August with more foot passengers. That takes us more than a quarter of a century back – and of course before the Öresund Bridge opened,” says Molslinjen’s CEO, Kristian Durhuus.
He also points to how travellers have welcomed the company’s digitalisation of ticket sales, booking and check-in:
“We’ve seen increasing volumes of both foot passengers and cars ever since it was introduced.”
The rise was not limited to foot passengers. 125,218 cars were transported – 6.4 per cent more than the 117,700 carried in August 2024 – marking the highest August car figure since 2019, before the pandemic. In total, Öresundslinjen carried 733,374 passengers in August 2025, up from 705,000 a year earlier. Bus traffic also increased, with 1,254 buses making the crossing – the highest since 2019 and well above the 1,100 recorded last year.
“It’s certainly a strong end to the summer. Now we’re looking forward to a busy autumn as we convert another ferry to electric operation and launch new Öresund Express buses between Copenhagen and Gothenburg, which will also add to the number of buses and passengers,” says Kristian Durhuus.
