Port of Barcelona to Build Third Ro-Pax Ferry Terminal in EUR 54.7 Million Project
PortAs part of its commitment to maintaining its position as one of the Mediterranean’s foremost passenger ferry ports, the Port of Barcelona has awarded the contract for the construction of its third ro-pax ferry terminal. Concurrently, it has awarded the concession to operate its new car terminal to Japan’s NYK Line and the contract to build an Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system for its latest cruise ship terminal.
The EUR 54.7 million construction contract for the new terminal has been awarded to construction companies SATO and Rubau, with the new ro-pax terminal located at Adossat Quay, marking the final phase of the development of this major cruise and ferry facility. In 2018, the Port of Barcelona agreed to relocate ferry traffic away from the city centre.
The new ro-pax terminal will have three berths with water depths of 12m and 8.5m and will offer Onshore Power Supply to berthed ferries. Construction is expected to take 51 months to complete. When operational in late 2029, Barcelona will have consolidated ferry operations at Adossat Quay.
Ro-pax ferry operators currently serving Barcelona include Baleària, GNV, Grimaldi, and Trasmed GLE.
Meanwhile, the world's second-largest car carrier operator, Japan's NYK, will invest EUR 75 million in the Port of Barcelona's new Príncep d'Espanya car terminal, the largest investment to date by a Japanese company in a Spanish state-owned port. NYK has a 27-year contract to operate this new facility.
NYK's new car terminal, Barcelona's third, covers an area of 101,058m² and is expected to be operational in early 2027.
The terminal will feature an automated silo with a capacity for 8,160 vehicles and is adjacent to a rail terminal with direct access to Spain and Europe's rail networks. NYK is expected to operate up to 10 car trains a week from this facility.
The Port of Barcelona has also awarded a contract for the construction and commissioning of its first Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system for cruise ships to Powercon. The OPS will be installed at the port's new Terminal H on Adossat Quay, which has been operated by MSC Cruises since early 2025.
