For the past 30 years, Poland’s ferry fleet has been registered abroad in open registries, most commonly the Cyprus international ship register.

“This is a very significant step towards regaining what we have lost in the Baltic over recent years. The ferry was designed by Polish naval architects, built at a Polish shipyard and will serve a Polish shipowner. Crucially, it will sail under the Polish flag. After 30 years, the white and red returns to the mast,” said Arkadiusz Marchewka, Poland’s Deputy Minister of Infrastructure responsible for maritime affairs and inland navigation, at a recent conference in Szczecin, according to Polish media outlet Gospodarka Morska.

With the delivery of BURSZTYN UNITY, following that of sister ship JANTAR UNITY in December 2025, Poland has established itself in the industry as a supplier of large RoPax ferries built at European shipyards. Following BURSZTYN UNITY’s delivery, all ongoing newbuilding projects involving RoPax ferries exceeding 15,000 GT for European and other non-US Western ferry operators are now under construction at Chinese shipyards.

BURSZTYN UNITY, which called at Swinoujscie for the first time on 29 October, will be formally named in Szczecin on 11 November, Poland’s Independence Day. The ferry will operate on POLSCA Baltic Ferries’ routes from Swinoujscie to southern Sweden.
