NORRÖNA saves up to 26 tonnes of CO2 per week using shore power in Iceland

FerrySmyril Lines North Atlantic RoPax NORRÖNA connected to shore power at its Icelandic port of call Seyðisfjörður for the first time 10 September.

The shore-power project was carried out in cooperation with the local municipality of Múlaþing, which was responsible for the shoreside work. Faroese company ETV designed and installed the shore-power solution aboard NORRÖNA.

Shore power allows NORRÖNA to shut down its auxiliary engines while alongside. Due to the vessel’s long port stay in Seyðisfjörður, this is estimated to save seven to eight tonnes of fuel per week, corresponding to a reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 22–26 tonnes per week.

Air and noise pollution are also significantly reduced, as engine noise, vibrations and certain emissions are eliminated when the auxiliary engines are shut down. This improves conditions both on board and for people living and working near the port.

“The project demonstrates what can be achieved when public authorities, ports, shipping companies and suppliers work together on practical solutions. We at Smyril Line are very grateful for the excellent cooperation with the municipality of Múlaþing and ETV,” said Jens Meinhard Rasmussen, CEO of Smyril Line.

Shore power forms part of Smyril Line’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its operations and develop sustainable maritime transport in the North Atlantic. Virtually all electricity in Iceland is produced using renewable energy sources - primarily hydroelectric and geothermal energy.

NORRÖNA sails one of the world's longest ferry routes, connecting the Faroe Islands, Denmark, and Iceland.
