
New ICS Chairman Designate named
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) concluded its Annual General Meeting and Board Meeting in Athens, announcing key leadership changes and strategic developments. John Denholm CBE was unanimously recommended as the next Chairman, succeeding Emanuele Grimaldi in June 2026. Three new Vice Chairs were appointed: Dr. Gaby Bornheim (Germany), Carl-Johan Hagman (Japan), and Claes Berglund (Sweden).
Thomas Kazakos succeeded Guy Platten as Secretary General, with the transition marked by the presence of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. The Malta International Shipowners Association was elevated to Full Member status, reflecting its growing maritime influence.
Discussions focused on geopolitical uncertainties, new IMO GHG reduction measures set for adoption in October, protectionism, supply chain security, and seafarer welfare. The Board highlighted concerns over global trade disruptions due to protectionism and economic bifurcation. ICS thanked outgoing Vice Chairs Themis Papadopoulos and Caroline Yang for their service. The organization emphasized its commitment to strong, unified leadership to navigate the shipping industry’s evolving challenges.
