New fully electric ferry for Scandlines was named
FerryOn 7 January, Scandlines named its newbuild THE BALTIC WHALE at a ceremony in Rødby. The ship’s sponsor at the ceremony was Lykke Friis, former Danish Minister for Climate and now Director of Think Tank Europa. The fully electric ferry, measuring 147.4 metres in length and 24.8 metres in breadth, was delivered from Cemre Shipyard in Turkey in October last year.
The ferry was launched under the name FUTURA, but Scandlines later changed the name to THE BALTIC WHALE, a name commonly used for a species of porpoise that, among other places, lives in the Baltic Sea. Scandlines has not yet set a specific date for putting THE BALTIC WHALE into service on the route between Rødby and Puttgarden but stated at the event that this would take place during the first quarter of 2026.
