NEPTUNUS to become automated with battery-hybrid propulsion
FerryThe contract, valued at SEK 97 million, was secured by Stockholms Reparationsvarv AB, with Zeabuz and Metstech providing the essential automation and energy technologies for the transformation of Färjerederiet's NEPTUNUS. The project will deliver a complete automation and energy solution to enhance safety, efficiency, and environmental performance on the Gullmarsleden route between Finnsbo and Skår in Bohuslän—an essential part of Sweden’s transport network.
As part of the conversion, Zeabuz will implement an advanced automated transit system that enables NEPTUNUS to navigate precisely between docks. The system autonomously manages acceleration, steering, and positioning, optimizing battery use, reducing operator workload, and ensuring stable and predictable operations on this high-frequency route.
Metstech will supply and integrate the new battery system, allowing NEPTUNUS to operate with high energy efficiency and to recharge rapidly during normal turnaround times.
The retrofit, to be carried out at Stockholm Repair Yard, represents a significant investment in next-generation, sustainable ferry technology. It also demonstrates how automation and smart energy systems can deliver immediate performance gains for public ferry fleets.
