NatPower Launches GBP 1 Billion Teesside GigaPark to Power UK’s Largest Battery Storage and Port Electrification Project
NatPower UK has announced plans for the Teesside GigaPark, a landmark GBP 1 billion clean energy project at Wilton International in Redcar. In partnership with Sembcorp Utilities (UK) Limited, the development will deliver one of the largest and longest-duration battery energy storage systems in the UK—a 1 GW facility capable of storing up to 8 GWh of renewable energy.
Fully privately financed, the project will initially provide four hours of storage, with the ability to expand to eight—an unprecedented combination that will help balance the national grid, cut emissions, and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaker plants. By storing surplus renewable power and releasing it when demand peaks, the system could save the UK energy system up to GBP 3.5 billion a year, according to research by Imperial College London.
The GigaPark will also be the first in the UK to integrate large-scale energy storage with port electrification, supplying clean shore power to ships at berth and supporting the transition to electric propulsion in shipping. This positions Teesside as a leader in marine decarbonisation while strengthening the UK’s wider net-zero strategy.
Construction is underway and grid connection is planned for 2028.
