More Details Revealed On Molslinjen’s Groundbreaking New Electric Catamarans
High-speedThe construction of Molslinjen’s new electric giant catamarans is now underway at the Incat shipyard in Tasmania. The yard has also revealed design proposals for the fully electric vessels – and they promise to be both impressive and powerful. The two ferries - and probably also a third ferry before the turn of the year 2027-2028 will be responsible for a green transition and replace the diesel-powered catamarans for the route between Jutland and Zealand.
The project represents the world’s largest ever maritime electrification initiative. A key innovation will be the new drive-through design, enabling vehicles to board at one end and disembark at the other, with two separate car decks to reduce congestion during loading and unloading.
Each vessel will measure 129 metres in length and 30.5 metres in width, accommodating up to 1,483 passengers and 500 cars. Onboard battery capacity will reach 45,000 kWh per ship.
Power will be delivered by electric motors rated at around 52,700 kW, providing service speeds of more than 40 knots (approximately 74 km/h). By comparison, the existing ferries in operation produce about 36,500 kW each.
