Incat Crowther to design 80-metre high-speed catamaran for Korea Express Ferry
High-speedIncat Crowther has been contracted by South Korean shipbuilder Kangnam Corporation to design an 80-metre high-speed catamaran RoPax ferry for Korea Express Ferry (KEF). The vessel is intended for routes connecting Incheon Metropolitan City with the Yellow Sea islands of Daecheongdo, Baengnyeongdo, and Socheongdo in Ongjin County, South Korea.
The project continues a prior collaboration between Incat Crowther, Kangnam Corporation, and KEF. The companies previously worked together on the 72-metre passenger ferry KOREA PRIDE, which has been in service with KEF from Incheon since 2022.
Following the operational performance of KOREA PRIDE, KEF was selected to replace the existing aging RoPax vessels on these routes. The new ferry will feature updated design elements aimed at improving operational efficiency and accommodating increased demand.
The vessel will have a vehicle deck with capacity for up to 60 cars or 50 utility trucks. It is designed to carry a maximum of 572 passengers and 12 crew members, with a service speed of up to 45 knots. The design includes twin pedestrian access ramps for step-free access to the passenger deck and a stern ramp for vehicle loading and unloading.
Passenger facilities will include four seating classes (economy, premium, business, and first class), along with dedicated areas for families, passengers with pets, and wheelchair users. The air-conditioned passenger deck will also contain a kiosk, pantry, cargo and luggage storage, a medical room, bathroom facilities, a smoking room, and massage chairs in the business and first-class areas.
The propulsion system consists of six engines configured for improved redundancy, reliability, and manoeuvrability, along with enhanced power-to-weight ratio and reduced fuel consumption. The vessel will also be fitted with an aft control station to assist with visibility and safety during berthing operations.
Dan Mace, Technical Manager at Incat Crowther, stated: “We are pleased to partner again with Kangnam Corporation and Korea Express Ferry on this project. The new vessel will feature a six-engine drivetrain using MTU M05 series engines, paired with standard waterjets and gearboxes to simplify installation and maintenance. The design includes a wide turning circle to facilitate vehicle loading and unloading.”
Sung Man Hwang, CEO of Korea Express Ferry, stated: “This new vessel represents a significant step in improving connectivity between Ongjin County and Incheon. The increased vehicle capacity will support local businesses and residents, while providing reliable and comfortable passenger service. We look forward to working with Incat Crowther and Kangnam Corporation on this project.”
Construction of the vessel is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, with delivery planned for 2028.
