GNV orders four new LNG-powered ro-pax vessels to expand and modernise fleet by 2030

FerryGNV has announced an order for the construction of four additional new ro-pax vessels, to be built at Guangzhou Shipyard International in China. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2026, with the first ship expected to be delivered in early 2028, followed by the others at six-month intervals.

The new 71,300 gross tonnage vessels will have a length of 237 metres, and a width of 33 metres. They will accommodate up to 2,500 people (including passengers and crew) and feature over 500 cabins and 3,500 lane metres of garage space.

As with the GNV VIRGO and GNV AURORA—currently under construction at the same shipyard and scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025, 11 months ahead of schedule—the new units will be LNG-powered and equipped with state-of-the-art environmental technologies. These will ensure a reduction in CO2 emissions of over 50% per transport unit compared to the previous generation. This major initiative marks a further step in GNV’s transition towards more sustainable models, with a strong commitment to environmental preservation as a key competitive driver for both the company and the regions it serves.

The new vessels have been designed to be even more welcoming and functional, ensuring maximum comfort for passengers. They will feature spacious cabins, relaxing lounge areas with large panoramic windows, elegant interior design, high-quality furnishings, ergonomic seating, and digitised services. Dedicated children’s areas, a large outdoor terrace, and pet-friendly spaces will also be included. The aim is to fully renew and enhance the onboard experience by meeting emerging market demands and setting new industry benchmarks through improvements in travel experience, onboard environments, safety, sustainability, comfort, and technology.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of GNV, stated: “With this major investment, we are further accelerating our fleet renewal plan, supporting the bold and ambitious growth strategy we envision for the company through to 2030. Over the coming years, we aim to achieve ambitious goals and strengthen our market presence, becoming recognised leaders in the ferry sector for the value we create for passengers and customers alike. The order of four additional vessels once again confirms that, for GNV, environmental sustainability and safety are essential, non-negotiable pillars of our business, as well as key competitive drivers to achieve our corporate objectives. Among the most important is our commitment to supporting the competitiveness of the regions we serve: shipping is a vital infrastructure that ensures reliable connections and stimulates the socioeconomic development of local communities.”

Matteo Catani, CEO of GNV, added: “The company aims to consolidate its role as a strategic infrastructure for Italy and its connections across the Mediterranean. This vision is at the heart of GNV’s new positioning, which increasingly focuses on placing the customer at the centre, making them feel like a true protagonist—thanks also to our growing commitment to innovation and sustainability. Ecological transition, economic growth, and continuous service improvement are all part of a single strategy and represent a key competitive advantage in today’s market.”
