Fred Olsen steps down as Bonheur chairman after seven decades

Veteran Norwegian shipowner Fred Olsen has stepped down as chairman and board member of Bonheur, the Oslo-listed investment company at the heart of his family's industrial empire, the company confirmed ahead of its annual general meeting on 27 May 2026.

Olsen has served as chairman of the Olsen family's investment company for a full 70 years. Rather than retiring outright, the 97-year-old intends to redirect his energies, with the company stating he wishes to devote his capacity to supporting the Bonheur group on business development rather than more formal duties.

The succession reflects a structural consideration. Olsen's daughter, Anette Olsen, will continue to lead the company both as managing director and through Fred Olsen & Co, and under the law she cannot simultaneously serve as chairman. Bonheur's shareholder committee selected Gaute Gjelsten as independent chairman ahead of the general meeting, a board member since 2025.

The wider Fred Olsen Group spans cruise operations through Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, renewable energy and shipping interests including Fred. Olsen Express, the fast-ferry operator in the Canary Islands, marking a significant generational transition for one of Norway's most enduring family business dynasties.
