Fossil-free fuel-pooling-initiative launched by Gotlandsbolaget
FerryGotlandsbolaget has launched a new initiative to reduce emissions from their existing fleet called “Gotland Carbon Solutions”. Two of the vessels operating in the Gotland service are fitted with modern dual fuel LNG engines, which make it possible to run on nearly 100% fossil-free fuels in terms of bioLNG.
“This enables us to finance a higher share of liquefied biogas in our operations under the FuelEU Maritime regulation”, says Henry Hammarström, Energy Specialist at Gotlandsbolaget. Gotland Carbon Solutions aims to offer partners both long- and short-term compliance pooling support which enables Gotlandsbolaget to further increase the share of fossil-free fuels within their own fleet.
In this way, the company contribute not only to their own decarbonization but to the climate ambition of the European shipping industry, Gotlandsbolaget states. The two present dual fuel LNG ferries in Gotlandsbolaget are VISBY and GOTLAND, delivered in 2018 and 2019.
Earlier this year, Gotlandsbolaget ordered the “Gotland Horizon X”, a catamaran newbuilding project that enables even greater use of fossil-free fuels in the Gotland traffic service.
