First two of Fjord1’s autonomously operated electric ferries launched
FerryThe first two, out of four in total, of the world’s first autonomous electric ferries for Fjord1, TBN: FANARAAKEN and TBN: SKAGASTØL, have been launched at Tersan Shipyard in Turkey.
The newbuilding project was signed in February 2024 followed by the steel-cutting ceremony in October 2024. The 120-metre-long ferries with capacity of 399 passengers and 120 vehicles will operate on Fjord1’s Lavik-Oppedal route with autonomous navigation and a high degree of automation of vessel functions that replace manual operations.
Implementation of automation functions and autonomous systems, including auto-crossing and autodocking will take place in 2027, while autonomous navigation will be implemented in 2028. The following two vessels in the series, yard no. 1132, and 1133, will be named RINGSTIND and STOREBJØRN. The full quartet of the HAV Design developed ferries is expected to be delivered during second and third quarter next year.
