AURORA BOTNIA now back in service with the largest RoPax battery installation to date
FerryWasaline has expanded the onboard battery capacity of AURORA BOTNIA to 12.6 MWh from 2.2 MWh, making it the largest marine battery installation to date on a RoPax vessel in service. The project was executed within the BLRT Repair Yards network, with the installation of AYK Energy’s Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries performed by Tallinn Shipyard, and drydocking works carried out at Turku Repair Yard. Both yards, as subsidiaries of BLRT Grupp, contributed their respective expertise to the project.
From the initial planning of Wasaline’s AURORA BOTNIA, the company set the target of achieving fully carbon-neutral operations by 2030 — something that will be achieved well ahead of time due to a recently signed biogas contract with Gasum and a FuelEU Maritime pooling agreement with Stena Line, the latter of which also acquired Wasaline in November last year with closing expected to take place at the beginning of this year.
AURORA BOTNIA is equipped with dual-fuel engines and 12.6 MWh batteries, and it uses electric-powered Azimuth thrusters. The new battery upgrade is expected to further cut fossil energy use by approximately 10,000 MWh annually.
Built at Rauma Marine Constructions, the hybrid RoPax ferry AURORA BOTNIA entered service on 28 August 2021.
