AURORA BOTNIA is the first ferry ever built specifically for the Vaasa–Umeå route, despite traffic on the connection dating back to the 1940s. Ten years ago, the plan to build a purpose-designed vessel for the route was met with scepticism, with some questioning whether such an investment could be justified for a route linking two relatively small cities. The vision nonetheless remained clear: to create a modern ship designed around the specific needs of the connection. It became reality when AURORA BOTNIA entered service in August 2021, marking a new era for passenger and cargo transport across the Gulf of Bothnia.

Wasaline is part of Stena Line, which the company says provides long-term stability and supports continued development of the Vaasa–Umeå route in the years ahead.

Five years after its launch, AURORA BOTNIA remains among the most sustainable RoPax ferries in the world. The vessel was developed in close cooperation with Finnish maritime cluster companies and designed to minimise environmental impact while ensuring reliable year-round operation in demanding northern conditions.

The ship's technology has continued to evolve since entering service. Its engines have been continuously monitored, tested, and further developed in collaboration with Wärtsilä, helping to optimise performance and reduce emissions, while the vessel's battery capacity has also been expanded, further strengthening its position as a pioneer in sustainable ferry operations.

The onboard experience has been well received by passengers, with the restaurants and food concept praised for their quality, local flavours, and welcoming atmosphere. Demand for onboard shopping has also exceeded expectations, prompting an expansion of the vessel's shop a few years ago to offer a wider selection of products.

AURORA BOTNIA and the Vaasa–Umeå route also play an important role in security of supply. The vessel can carry wide, heavy, and high cargo, with a freight capacity of 1,500 lane metres, and departure frequency on the route has increased since it entered service, further strengthening the connection between Finland and Sweden. Freight remains one of the cornerstones of Wasaline's business.

Wasaline says the success of AURORA BOTNIA shows what is possible when partners share a long-term vision and the courage to invest in the future, with the vessel exceeding expectations in passenger growth, sustainability performance, and regional impact. The ferry has also strengthened the international attractiveness of the Kvarken region, with passengers now travelling from across Europe as well as from Finland and Sweden, drawn in particular by the region's nature and, especially, the winter ice.
