A third Öresundslinjen ferry to become fully electric

FerryAfter electrifying the ferries TYCHO BRAHE and AURORA, it is now time for the ferry HAMLET to be converted to full electrical operation, charged with electricity from wind, water and solar energy.

Molslinjen has just placed an order for some of the world's largest ferry batteries. Echandia will deliver the battery pack that converts HAMLET from fossil fuel to fully electric propulsion. The battery system is tailored for a minimum operational lifespan of 10 years without requiring battery replacement. Furthermore, the battery can be recharged in both ports in as little as 11 minutes on average.

"Echandia has batteries that offer a combination of long durability and low weight, which ensures the lowest costs and the lowest climate impact throughout the life of the battery pack," says Kristian Durhuus, CEO of Molslinjen.

The battery pack is expected to be delivered in the first half of 2025. With HAMLET’s 8,000 annual departures on fully electric operation, 95 percent of all 41,000 annual departures between Sweden and Denmark will take place with pure green electricity. This will reduce the crossing's total climate impact on the Öresund to below 1,500 tonnes of CO2 annually.

The Helsingborg-Helsingör crossing had annual emissions of 37,800 tonnes of CO2 before the conversion of the line's first two ferries in 2016.

Echandia is already supplying battery packs for Molslinjen's two new electric ferries for Alslinjen and Samsølinjen. These ferries are being built by Cemre Shipyard in Turkey and will sail to Denmark in late 2024 and early 2025.

"The conversion to make our ferries emission-free is our main task in the coming years. Now we are taking the next step on the Öresundslinjen and carrying out the conversion of HAMLET - and later the world's biggest ferry electrification project ever, when our ferries on the Kattegatt will start running with electricity," says Christian Durhuus.

The conversion of HAMLET is expected to be completed in 2025.
