Silversea announces huge fleet refurbishment
Silversea planned the biggest fleet refurbishment ever occurred in the line's history: the luxury cruise company will invest USD 170 million to renovate interiors, public spaces and high-tech equipment.
The investment will cover the upgrade of the whole fleet (10 units, including 4 expedition ships), to be renovated during the conventional drydock services.
The first ship undergoing refurbishment will be the 16,800 GT SILVER WIND, built at T. Mariotti shipyard in 1995 and capable of 300 passengers, to be renovated in Palermo.
Silversea didn't disclose the name of the yard; however, in past the company developed a strict relationship with Fincantieri which led to the accord sealed last summer for the construction of the SILVER MUSE, launched at Sestri Ponente yard in early July. The Italian shipbuilding company will allegedly host the SILVER WIND in Palermo yard, very skilled in demanding operations (like the Rinascimento program launched by MSC): refurbishment, particularly upgrading public spaces and hi-tech equipment, will take place in Sicily from October 20 to November 7.
The second unit to be renovated is the expedition vessel SILVER DISCOVERER. She will be refurbished in Singapore from October 29 to November 10.
The name of the appointed yard is still unknown, however the Asian port hosts several appropriate yards; Sembawang and Keppel are two renowned names which already upgraded similar units.
Finally, the 28,800 GT SILVER WHISPER, built at T. Mariotti shipyard in 2000 and capable of 382 passengers, will be renovated in the Bahamas in December, also installing two new satellite antennas to increase internet speed on board. Grand Bahamas Shipyard, boasting a long track-list of shiprepairs and refurbishments on large cruiseships, seems to be the elected group.
