Scandlines and Caterpillar Motoren sign MoU for methanol conversion
FerryScandlines and Caterpillar Motoren have signed a MoU to investigate the use of methanol on MaK-powered ferries in service on the Rostock-Gedser route. They will exchange information on methanol solutions to reduce CO2 emissions in ferry operations.
The signed MoU includes project planning for converting MaK M 32 C powered ferries from diesel to methanol dual fuel applications. Caterpillar considers green methanol, which is produced from renewable sources, as a promising alternative to traditional fuels.
The plan is that Caterpillar Motoren will provide a test engine in its workshop in 2025. If Scandlines concludes that the test engine meets the expectations and fulfills the conditions, there is a possibility that the first Scandlines diesel engine will be converted in 2027.
With 39,000 departures on seven ferries, Scandlines in 2023 transported close to 6.4 million passengers, over 1.6 million cars and over 700,000 freight units on the routes Puttgarden-Rødby and Rostock-Gedser.
