Algérie Ferries takes ANEK’s EL VENIZELOS on long-term charter
FerryANEK Lines veteran ro-pax ferry EL VENIZELOS has been taken out of service and drydocked at ONEX Elefsis Shipyards in Greece for a major drydocking and refit prior to starting a long-term charter to Algeria’s Algérie Ferries.
The 38,261gt 1992-built ferry, the largest in the ANEK fleet, made her last sailing from Chania, Crete to Piraeus on 25 May before drydocking in Elefsina, close to the port of Piraeus. The vessel is being replaced on the Piraeus-Crete route by the 29,992gt 1992-built ro-pax KISSAMOS.
The 1,740-passenger capacity EL VENIZELOS, which can carry 1,650 lane metres of vehicles, is the flagship of the ANEK fleet, having served the company for 33 years.
Meanwhile, the ONEX Elefsis Shipyard has just completed the drydocking and major refit of the Superfast Ferries owned ro-pax SUPERFAST IV, formerly ANEK’s HELLENIC SPIRIT.
This 32,694gt 2001-built vessel is due to enter service on Superfast’s Patras-Igoumenitsa-Ancona service, running alongside sistership SUPERFAST III, ex OLYMPIC CHAMPION.
The work scope carried out during SUPERFAST IV’s refit included full overhaul and maintenance of the vessel’s main and auxiliary diesels, interior upgrades, repainting in Superfast colours, drydocking and the installation of an exhaust gas scrubber system. The vessel can carry 1,370 passengers and 2,045 lanemetres of vehicles and has a service speed of 30 knots.
