MOL and IBM Japan launch AI platform to revolutionize vessel operations
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and IBM Japan have announced the joint development and launch of a cutting-edge AI-powered platform designed to enhance decision-making and safety in vessel operations. The new system, now live, is centered on MOL’s Safety Operation Supporting Center (SOSC), which oversees the safe navigation of MOL-affiliated vessels worldwide.
In response to the increasingly complex marine environment—marked by rapidly changing weather, sea conditions, and geopolitical factors—the platform integrates real-time data from multiple sources, including weather, vessel status, and geopolitical developments. This centralized approach enables SOSC personnel to quickly identify critical information, speeding up and improving the quality of operational decisions.
Key features of the platform include:
- Real-Time Situation Awareness: The system consolidates and visualizes weather, sea, and vessel operation data, providing a comprehensive overview for vessels underway.
- AI-Driven Decision Support: Leveraging generative AI, the platform analyzes both historical and current operational data to identify risks, monitor vessel movements, and prioritize actions.
- Advanced Knowledge Utilization: By drawing on past accident records and field insights, the platform enables organization-wide sharing and analysis, further supporting proactive and accurate decision-making.
Developed using IBM’s Garage methodology, the platform combines AI-driven data analysis with the expertise of experienced captains, setting a new standard for safety and operational excellence in the shipping industry. MOL plans to expand the platform’s functionality and its application across the industry, aligning with its "BLUE ACTION 2035 Phase 2" management plan focused on safety and digital transformation.
