Echandia launches new battery system it says lowers upfront cost and footprint by 30 percent
Echandia announced the launch of Echandia Core, a new marine battery system built on lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) technology. Developed for fully electric and hybrid vessel applications, Echandia Core is designed, according to the company, to deliver the safety, lifetime and predictable performance of LTO with a lower upfront investment and smaller installation footprint.
Lowering the upfront cost barrier for LTO
Echandia describes Echandia Core as its most important product launch since the company's founding. According to Echandia, it has been developed to address one of the main barriers to wider LTO adoption in maritime applications: the initial investment. The company says LTO is often highly competitive over the full lifecycle, citing long service life, minimal degradation and high operational reliability, but that for many vessel projects the upfront cost has remained a barrier.
Echandia claims Echandia Core lowers that threshold. Compared with the company's previous battery system, Echandia says it delivers 30 percent lower upfront cost and a 30 percent smaller footprint while preserving the safety, lifetime and reliability the company associates with LTO in demanding marine operations.
Built around real project economics
"Echandia Core is the result of focused engineering around real project economics," says Magnus Eriksson, CEO of Echandia. "LTO has always made a very strong case when you look at total cost of ownership. Its long lifetime, fast charge and discharge capability, and low degradation are exactly what many marine operators need. What we are doing with Echandia Core is lowering the upfront cost barrier, so more projects can access those lifecycle benefits from day one."
A broader portfolio for fully electric and hybrid operations
According to Echandia, Echandia Core is designed for both fully electric propulsion and hybrid applications, including spinning reserve, peak shaving, backup power and load levelling.
"Echandia Core does not replace our existing platforms, Echandia Ultra and Echandia Robust. It complements our portfolio and expands the market," says Felix Backgård, Head of Technical Sales at Echandia. "Some vessels still need the highest-performance system we can build. Others need a more cost-efficient way to access the safety, lifetime and reliability of LTO. Echandia Core gives them that choice."
