DFDS rejected by Guernsey for an offer for an inter-island RoPax service
FerryGuernsey’s Committee for Economic Development has reviewed a February proposal from DFDS to run an inter-island ferry service using the RoPax STENA VINGA, with Friday arrivals from Jersey and Monday return sailings. Following consultations with Guernsey Ports, Customs and Immigration, the Committee assessed operational, legal and market impacts, including effects on existing services and port operations.
It also considered the political commitment by the States of Jersey to a reciprocal model, such as the weekly return service proposed by Brittany Ferries. The Committee rejected the proposal in its current form, citing operational and staffing challenges, particularly due to Friday evening arrivals outside standard hours, which would increase costs and disrupt weekend operations.
Concerns were also raised about the vessel’s availability due to reported maintenance needs. It concluded the plan does not align with agreed principles of reciprocity but remains open to discussions with DFDS, Jersey authorities and Brittany Ferries on alternative solutions better suited to island needs.
DFDS chartered the 2005-built STENA VINGA in December 2024 from Stena Line. The vessel, with a capacity of 400 passengers and 1,548 lanemetres, was taken on charter in connection with the company beginning a 20-year contract in March 2025 with the Government of Jersey to operate ferry services between Jersey, the UK, and France.
