Continued increase in Swedish passenger traffic during 2022

The number of Swedish passengers increased for the second year in a row and is approaching the levels seen before the pandemic broke out in 2020 according to official statistics from Trafikanalys. That is still around 5 million passengers fewer than in 2018 and 2019. The number of passengers to and from Swedish ports in international traffic increased by 59 percent, to 21.7 million in 2022 compared to 2021.

Arriving passengers in domestic traffic were 1.85 million, the same level as in 2021. This shows new official statistics from Trafikanalys.

- For the second year in a row, the number of passengers increased in Swedish ports. Domestic traffic recovered from the pandemic already in 2021, while international traffic had about half of normal flows in the same year. The number of passengers on foreign traffic to and from Swedish ports increased by 59 percent, to 21.7 million in 2022. That is 8 million more passengers than in 2021.

The number of passengers in Swedish ports totalled 25.2 million in 2022. This was an increase of 47 percent from 17.2 million passengers in 2021 (See Figure). Stockholm's ports (Stockholm including Kapellskär, Nynäshamn and Norvik) had a total of 7.8 million passengers and was the largest ahead of Helsingborg, with 6.3 million passengers. Stockholm also has the largest port for cruise ships in Sweden, where a big recovery was seen in 2022, from 211,000 passengers in 2021 to 322,000 passengers in 2022.

Total cargo handling amounted, as in 2021, to 168 million tonnes in 2022. Domestic cargo handling decreased by one million tonnes, to 22 million tonnes, while international cargo handling increased by one million tonnes, to 146 million tonnes.
