Baleària and Axpo successfully carry out the first bioLNG operations at Enagás terminals
Baleària and Axpo Iberia have this week marked a new milestone by making the first supplies of bioLNG from the two Enagás terminals in Huelva and Barcelona a reality. The Huelva terminal provided supplies to the port of Malaga, where Baleària operates the route with Melilla with the RUSADIR ro-pax and from the Barcelona terminal, bioLNG was supplied to the fast ferry MARGARITA SALAS, which connects Barcelona with Mallorca and Menorca.
These operations have made it possible to load bioLNG (supplied by Axpo and which has the corresponding Sustainability Certificates) directly onto ships, thanks to the adaptation of the terminals to process bioLNG, which is obtained from biomethane injected into the gas network and processed in liquid form. In this sense, Baleària and Axpo have demonstrated the viability of creating green corridors between European ports, or even connecting two continents, as in the case of the journey in the Alboran Sea.
The general manager of Baleària, Georges Bassoul, has pointed out that these supplies "represent a further step in Baleària's objective to reduce our carbon footprint" and has recalled that four years ago Baleària already made the first pilot trip on a fast ferry with 100% renewable fuel in Europe. Likewise, Bassoul has indicated that "the plan is to increase the use of this energy in our fleet, which will allow us to make decarbonized trips."
The biomethane supplied and certified by Axpo comes from the treatment of agricultural waste at the Noguera Renovables plant (Lleida), the first in Spain to produce biomethane from cattle manure, and from the use of organic waste at the Valdemingómez Technology Park (Madrid).
