The first of Finnlines new Superstar-class ro-pax ferries, FINNSIRIUS, was launched at China’s CMI Jinling Weihai Shipyard on 30 August, while the second vessel, FINNCANOPUS celebrated its keel laying on 1 September.

The 68,460gt battery hybrid ferries are designed by Knud E. Hansen and built for operation between Sweden and Finland (Kapellskär- Långnäs-Naantali), when delivered in 2023.

A keel laying ceremony was held for Scandlines first zero-emission double-ended ro-pax on order at Turkey’s Cemre Shipyard, continuing the process to build the world’s largest zero direct emissions ferry.

When delivered in March 2024 the new ferry, designed by Norway’s LMG Marin, will operate between Puttgarden, in Germany and Rødby, carrying 140 passengers and 66 freight vehicles (approximately 1,200 lanemetres), an increase of 23% on the vessels currently maintaining this route.

Shanghai-based China-Japan International Ferry Co., Ltd. (CHINJIF), which was founded by both China COSCO Shipping Corporation Ltd, and Japan-China International Ferry Co., Ltd. (JIFCO) ordered a new ro-pax from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) Co.,Ltd. on 26 August 2022.

The new ro-pax will be named JIAN ZHEN HAO and is set to enter service on the Osaka (Japan)-Shanghai (China) route in May 2024.

Color Line's operating income was NOK 2.2 billion and the operating profit of NOK 238 million in the first half of 2022. This is in line with a normal pre-pandemic year despite the impact of the pandemic at the start of the year, high fuel prices and price increase. The result is driven by positive developments in demand, increased ticket revenues, good customer values and a stable freight market.

Corsica Linea’s next fleet addition, the LNG-powered A GALEOTTA left the Visentini shipyard to conduct sea trials ahead of its planned delivery in October this year.

Designed by NAOS Ship & Boat Design, the vessel will become Corsica Linea’s new flagship when she enters service on the company’s Marseille to Ajaccio/Bastia route.

Yard No. 238 at Visentini measures 206.6m length o.a., 28.2m beam and has a full load draught of 6.7m. Although the new design can carry a total of 920 persons, Corsica Linea has restricted passenger capacity on this vessel to 650 persons, with 216 cabins providing berths for 870 passengers.

The second LNG-powered ro-pax for Ferry Sunflower, a subsidiary of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines was launched at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shimonoseki Shipyard on 30 August 2022.

The new ferry, named SUNFLOWER MURASAKI measures 199.9m long, and 28m wide with a Japanese gross tonnage of about 17,300. She can carry up to 716 passengers, 100 cars, and 137 trucks (13m).

Molslinjen signs with Cemre Shipyard for two electric ferries

The Danish Ministry of Transport announced on Thursday that Molslinjen had won the two tenders for the Alslinjen and Samsølinjen routes. The very next day, contracts were signed for the construction of two new electric ferries with Cemre Shipyard in Turkey. 

The two new electric ferries must be put into production as soon as possible. Alslinjen's ferry is to be put into operation by September 2024, while Samsølinjen's ferry is to have its first trip in January 2025.

Apart from a few technical details, the two ferries will be identical.

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to Norwegian ship owner Torghatten Nord for two hydrogen-powered vessels operating on Norway’s longest ferry route, Vestfjordstrekninga, connecting Bodø, Røst, Værøy and Moskenes.

The two vessels, designed by Norwegian Ship Design, will use a minimum of 85% “green hydrogen” based fuel, helping to reduce CO2-emissions on the route by 26,500 tons each year. The two main components of the hydrogen system on board are the hydrogen storage part, feeding hydrogen to fuel cells and the fuel cells themselves, providing electric power for the propulsion and all other consumers on board.  The ferries are scheduled to enter operation in October 2025.

Wärtsilä to supply propulsion package for world’s largest aluminium catamaran

The technology group Wärtsilä will supply the engines, waterjets, and fuel storage and supply system for a new high speed catamaran ferry. The vessel is being built at the Incat yard in Tasmania, Australia on behalf of Argentinian ferry operator, Buquebus. Having an overall length of 130 metres, a width of 32 metres and the capacity to carry 2,100 passengers and 226 cars, it will be the largest aluminium catamaran ever built by Incat. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in July 2022.

Viking Line acquires Elomatic’s Elogrid solution for its VIKING GRACE ship. Elogrid reduces the additional resistance of the vessel and improves the thrust. The decision has a significant impact on the environmental impact of Viking Line's operations: fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions will be significantly reduced.

Port Everglades welcomed Accordia Shipping's newest ship, MINCHAH, on the vessel's maiden call to the South Florida port. Deputy Port Director Glenn Wiltshire presented a traditional plaque and port challenge coin to mark the occasion.

With a speed of 20 knots, the 127m long, 11,591gt MINCHAH has a capacity for 1,200 cars. Built in 1997, the Panamanian-flagged vessel also features a hoistable deck that allows Accordia to handle over-sized and heavy cargoes.

Port of Ystad’s new ferry berths, which have significantly increased the port's capacity, were inaugurated on Monday 29 August by Ystad's mayor Paula Nilsson (M) and Carl Johan Sonesson (M), chairman of Region Skåne, who each drove a tugboat driver ashore from Polferries' MAZOVIA ro-pax in front of around 100 guests, mainly politicians and representatives from the local business community.

BIO-UV group secures deal to supply BWTS to luxury Ritz Carlton cruise ships

Chantiers de l’Atlantique has contracted BIO-UV group to supply BIO-SEA ballast water treatment systems to a pair of LNG-fueled super cruisers the French shipyard is building for luxury hotel group Ritz Carlton, a Marriott International brand.
When delivered in 2024 and 2025 respectively, the 46,000gt ILMA and LUMINARA will join the smaller Astander Shipyard-built EVRIMA– the first ever Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection vessel – which set sail earlier this year.

Evac launches a new generation wastewater treatment plant

Evac has developed a new, mid-size version of the Evac Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plant for various vessel types. The novel Evac MBR Mid-range treats all wastewater streams to current standards - and beyond.
Evac MBR offers the best possible treatment results by filtering up to 99% of microplastic particles and including the option for nutrient removal. The effluent quality is so good that the treated water can be reused or further processed onboard the vessel.

Royal Caribbean Group to Use SpaceX's Starlink in an Industry-first to Provide High-speed Internet Onboard Full Cruise Fleet

Royal Caribbean Group announced its plan to implement SpaceX's Starlink – making the Group the first in the cruise industry to adopt its high-speed, low-latency connectivity for a better onboard experience for guests and crew fleetwide. The innovative broadband internet service will be installed on all Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises ships, along with all new vessels for each of the brands.

DFDS receives BBB- investment grade credit rating from Scope

DFDS A/S has received a first-time issuer rating of BBB- with stable outlook from Scope Ratings GmbH (Scope). DFDS A/S’ senior unsecured debt was also rated BBB- in line with the issuer rating.

Ports of Stockholm breaks ground for Sweden's first electric connection for cruise ships

Ports of Stockholm invests in the environment and builds facilities for electric connection of cruise ships at Stadsgården. It is an environmental investment that leads to significantly lower emissions of air pollution in Stockholm and around the Baltic Sea.

In connection with the Stockholm H20 event during World Water Week, the first sod was laid for electrical connection facilities for cruise ships. As the first port in Sweden, Ports of Stockholm is now building electricity connections for cruise ships at berths 167 and 160 at Stadsgården.
