Replacing the smaller 1992-built CALAIS SEAWAYS, DFDS introduced the Stena E-Flexer Class CÔTE D’OPALE on the Dover-Calais route in the evening of 4 August.
Bareboat chartered for a period of ten years with a purchase option, CÔTE D'OPALE shares the characteristics of the standard E-Flexer with an intake of 3,100 lanemetres and 1,000 persons (passengers and crew). As she will operate five sailings per day in either direction with short turnarounds, the lower hold will most likely not be used, reducing the nominal capacity to 2,755 lanemetres on two decks, still a 55 per cent increase on CALAIS SEAWAYS. The vessel also boasts a separate 120-car capacity upper vehicle deck, accessed via an internal ramp.
CÔTE D'OPALE has a length of 215.9m and 27.8m width. It has retained the twin engine setup with a total output of 25,200 kW, yet to improve manoeuvrability a third bow thruster has been installed with the ship's bow and stern adapted to fit the linkspans in both Dover and Calais.
