Spain’s Ocmis Maritime starts new freight ro-ro service between Cartagena and Algeria

In early June Spanish ship operator Ocmis Maritime started a new twice-monthly freight ro-ro service across the Mediterranean, between Cartagena and the two Algerian ports of Tenes and Bjaija. The service will be operated by the chartered 270 lanemetre capacity 1989-built ro-ro SEA ROSE.

Newbuilding 782 floats. The first launch since the economic restart of Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) marked an important milestone for the shipyard on 17 June. It was preceded by the traditional christening of the vessel in the large shipbuilding hall on the fjord. On the same day, the deckhouse was to be placed on the vessel’s hull in the open air. This means that the 210-metre-long ro-ro ferry is as good as completed.

On more than 4,000 lane metres spread over four decks, the ferry TENNOR OCEAN, which is intended for freight transport, can accommodate 279 trailers.

First ferry from Cyprus to Greece after 21 years sails from DP World Limassol Terminal

DALEELA sailed from DP World Limassol port on Sunday, 19 June 2022, on its first round-trip to Greece, officially launching a ferry link, which aims to boost Cyprus’ connectivity with mainland Europe.

The ferry link, which has been reinstated after 21 years, will carry out 22 return trips from Limassol (Cyprus) to Piraeus (Greece) between June and September 2022.

Ports of Stockholm opens new quay at Frihamnen Port

Ports of Stockholm is one of the world’s largest passenger ports and Stockholm is a very popular cruise destination. Now the possibilities for cruise ships to call at Stockholm have increased with the opening of a brand-new quay at Frihamnen Port.
The new quay at Frihamnen Port in Stockholm opened on 21st June.

Wärtsilä and Stena to build the world’s largest hybrid vessels

Wärtsilä will supply its hybrid propulsion system for three new RoPax vessels currently built for Stena RoRo. Two of the ferries will have a battery capacity of 11.5 MWh, making them the marine industry’s largest hybrid vessels to date. This battery power is approximately double that typically being used currently for hybrid propulsion. The order was placed in May 2022.

Fully-electric ELLEN ferry establishes world-record 90-kilometer voyage on a single battery charge

The islands of Ærø and Als in Southern Denmark are connected by ELLEN, the world's longest-ranging fully electric ferry. ELLEN set a new world record on June 9th in Sønderborg, Denmark, where leaders from industry, government, and civil society joined the International Energy Agency (IEA) for the 7th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency.
On her return from the conference, where participants explored how international ambition on energy efficiency can be translated into faster and stronger real-world progress, ELLEN sailed 50 nautical miles – 92 kilometres – on a single battery charge.

Finnlines adds new vessels to its fleet and expands services

Finnlines will boost its maritime connections between Finland, Continental Europe and Spain with the deployment of the Eco class hybrid ro-ro vessels. As a new addition, a link between Ireland and Belgium will be launched.

To meet the increased capacity demand from customers, Finnlines is strengthening its services. The Company’s newest vessel, FINNECO I, will be deployed on the Bilbao–Zeebrugge/Antwerp–Travemünde–Helsinki/Kotka–Paldiski route. The maiden call in Antwerp took place on 16 June 2022 and Helsinki will follow on 20 June 2022. FINNECO II is expected to enter service in week 28 and Finneco III in week 29.

Construction of new class of eco-friendly ships for TUI Cruises begins

The steel cutting of the first of two new-concept gas powered ships (Liquified Natural Gas – LNG) for TUI Cruises took place at the presence of Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI, and Luigi Matarazzo, General Manager Merchant Ship Division of Fincantieri, in San Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine) at Centro Servizi Navali. The new units will be built at the Monfalcone shipyard and delivered in 2024 and in 2026, respectively.

Echandia deepens strategic partnership with Toshiba to develop fuel cells for heavy duty maritime applications

Echandia, developer of energy solutions for maritime electrification, has entered into an agreement to deepen its collaboration with Toshiba. The partnership agreement will focus on the development of fuel-cell technology combined with batteries to accelerate electrification of the maritime sector.

Turku safeguards Linnanniemi’s major projects with schedule changes

The City of Turku will reschedule the development of Linnanniemi and major projects in the area. The start of the berth investment related to the passenger travel port will be postponed by one year and the rental agreement for the field areas used for port traffic will be extended until the end of 2026.

Pentland Ferries appoints new managing director

Pentland Ferries has announced the appointment of a new managing director. Helen Inkster, will take up the role as of 21 June 2022. Helen re-joins the company from Orkney Ferries where she was Ferry Services Manager.

New board appointments at BC Ferries

BC Ferries welcomes six new board members appointed this week to the British Columbia Ferry Services Board -- the board that provides oversight to the day-to-day operations of the ferry company.

Port of Tallinn will build a new quay in Paldiski South Harbour to service wind farms

Port of Tallinn supervisory board decided to invest up to EUR 53 million to build a new 310-meter quay with a 10-hectare area beyond the quay in Paldiski South Harbour. The investment is co-financed by European Commission in the amount of EUR 20 million through the military mobility project EstMilMob, which aims to improve transport connections to Tapa over the next five years. The quay and hinterland area will be completed in summer 2025.
