Zero-emission AMHERST ISLANDER II and WOLFE ISLANDER IV successfully completed
The construction and trials of both 72-metre AMHERST ISLANDER II and the 99-metre WOLFE ISLANDER IV ferries were successfully completed. The vessels recently sailed from the shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Galati to Constanta, for onwards transportation to Canada onboard a heavy-lift semi-submersible transport vessel.
Both ships have been designed in-house by Damen. Their full-electric propulsion will reduce CO2 emissions by about 7 million kilogrammes per year. The vessels will operate solely on Lake Ontario – AMHERST ISLANDER II will replace the 33-car capacity FRONTENAC II on the Millhaven Ferry Dock-Amherst Island route whereas WOLFE ISLANDER IV will take over from the 55-car capacity WOLFE ISLANDER III on the Kingston-Wolfe Island service.
The year-round ferry connection from the mainland to Amherst Island is owned by the Ministry of Transportation, but operated by Loyalist Township; the Wolfe Island service is owned and operated by the Ministry of Transportation.
AMHERST ISLANDER II has a capacity for 42 cars and 300 passengers, WOLFE ISLANDER IV 80 cars and 399 passengers.
