Stena Line flags in Sweden's last train ferry
From 1 July 2021, Stena Line's Trelleborg ferry MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN will sail under the Swedish flag with both Swedish and German sailors on board. The ferry is one of two remaining train ferries that constitute an important infrastructure between Sweden and the continent.
The MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN ferry was built in 1996 and is 200 meters long with a capacity for 600 passengers, 440 cars and 3,200 lanemeters of cargo, of which 945 lanemetres are train tracks. Together with the train ferry SKÅNE, MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN sails on Stena Line's line between Trelleborg and Rostock with 3-4 departures per day and has done so throughout the pandemic. The line is an important infrastructure between Sweden and the continent, as the two ferries are Sweden's last train ferries in traffic between Sweden and Germany.
“Our train ferries are an important part of Swedish infrastructure that now sails with the Swedish flag at the top. Having alternatives to fixed connections with railways is important for Swedish industry, our imports and exports, but also for Sweden's preparedness, ”says Carl Mårtensson, Press Manager at Stena Line.
The physical flag change took place on 1 July in Trelleborg with the Swedish and German crew present. The new home port will be Trelleborg. The change of flag has not meant any shortage of work in the Swedish or German operations.
“Flagging MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN in Swedish is part of our global review of ship flags to reduce costs and complexity while strengthening our competitiveness and flexibility. MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN was the last German-flagged ferry in our fleet and as of now, all eight ships operating between Sweden, Germany and Denmark are Swedish-flagged ", says Carl Mårtensson, Press Manager at Stena Line.
